KELOWNA–An Okanagan concert series is helping Syrian refugees in camps overseas.
The first of two concerts was held in Kelowna at the Cathedral Church of St. Michael and All Angels on Friday.
“The plight of refugees is tragic and it’s overwhelming but can we do something about it? We can do a little bit,” says organizer Tracy Fehr.
Fehr is a soprano who organizes benefit tours through her own charity, A Song For Hope.
This concert series is a joint production between A Song For Hope and Early Music Okanagan.
An impressive roster of musicians from Vernon to Penticton are performing music from the Renaissance, Baroque and early Classical era.
“I am from Georgia,” says Natalia Polchenko, another organizer of the event. “Georgia went through war recently and some of my relatives were refugees so it feels like by helping other people I am still helping them as well.”
All of the funds raised will go to the United Nations Refugee Agency.
The second concert in the series takes place on Saturday, June 18 at the St. Saviour’s Anglican Church in Penticton at 7 p.m.
