The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is looking into a targeted shooting in Burnaby.
One man was shot around 9:30 p.m. on Forest Street, just a short distance from the BCIT campus.
Police were responding to reports of gunfire and when they arrived they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound, lying on the ground.
Bystanders were performing CPR when officers arrived, in an attempt to save the victim who has now been identified as 29-year-old Christopher Alexander Serrano. He also used the surname Hurtado.
He was rushed to Vancouver General Hospital but died of his injuries shortly after.
Hurtado pleaded guilty to aggravated assault after slashing a man in the throat with a box cutter during the Olympics in downtown Vancouver. The victim, Lee Reynolds, told Hurtado to stop verbally abusing women. Reynolds, a stranger, was injured but survived.
Today Reynolds told Global News that “any loss of life is unfortunate” and it was unfortunate Hurtado wasn’t able to turn his life around.”
Neighbours describe hearing several shots Tuesday morning and were not sure what was happening.
“I was scared,” said one neighbour. “I didn’t come out until later and there were lots of police cars here.”
Police said Hurtado was known to them and they are looking for a dark-coloured sedan that may have been involved in the incident. It would be damaged as it clipped two parked cars along the way.
