The town of Vulcan Alberta may be best known for its sci-fi tourist attractions, but it’s now getting attention for a new scientific endeavour – a solar park.

Vulcan’s solar park is pulling the town into a new era of power generation.

“It’s kind of neat to say that we are boldly going where no man has gone before,” Vulan Mayor Tom Grant said. “That’s what we’re trying to do; we’re trying to step out of the box.”

The solar park marks an eco-friendly way of energy generation in Canada, with a green living space, an art exhibit and a power source. It claims to be the first of its kind in Canada.

“It’s in the centre of town, it is a park and it is very unique,” Dave Borins, director of Bullfrog Power Community Renewable Projects, said.

The sunny town of Vulcan is an ideal candidate for solar energy.

“We sit geographically located in a perfect spot,” Mayor Grant said.

The integrated community green space and energy facility has been in the works since 2012. Through provincial funding and corporate grants, it opened this month.

The solar park currently generates enough energy to power two homes for an entire year.

The town plans to install an energy meter that will show visitors how much energy is being generated at any given time. All of the energy generated by the solar panels will directly benefit the community.

“We’re producing electricity and putting it right back into the grid,” Grant said.

The solar park is a green initiative to help the town of Vulcan live long and prosper.
