Though temperatures are set to soar on Saturday across Toronto and southern Ontario, along with that comes the chance of some severe weather.

While cooler air moved into Ontario the past week, warm, moist air is making its way up from the south. A cold front is also set to move in.

But whether or not the two will combine to create the threat of severe storms is a tough call.

Thunderstorms are expected Saturday morning across southern Ontario. Some regions could see some heavy rain and possibly hail. But that’s not where the real threat for severe storms comes.

As the morning storms move out, we could see some sunny breaks. Provided we get some increased daytime heating — temperatures are expected to climb to 30 C, with a humidex of 38 C — combined with the cold front and some wind shear (that gives storms their lift), we could see some severe thunderstorms develop in the afternoon. There is the possibility of strong winds, heavy rain and hail.

Remember to keep an eye on the sky and to be aware of the weather in your area. If threatening weather approaches, take shelter indoors.

As a reminder, a thunderstorm or tornado watch is issued when conditions are favourable for severe weather. A warning is when hazardous weather is imminent or occurring.
