New Mayfair swimming pool set to open

The new Mayfair swimming pool is set to open to the public tomorrow at 1 p.m.

The facility includes a lane pool, diving area, waterslide, as well as designated areas for sports, barbeques and picnic space.

The original Mayfair pool opened in 1959 and the Caswell Hill area staple was the oldest operating pool in Saskatoon until it reached the end of its life expectancy in 2008.

Extensive feedback was gathered from residents and community associations to identify key program and facility amenities before being adopted by city council in 2009.

“The facility was designed with the community in mind, and will provide quality recreation, health, and fitness opportunities to all residents of Saskatoon,” said Leisure Services Branch Manager Cary Humphrey.

Although the pool was scheduled to be filled by June 25, it had to go through over 250 systems checks and any necessary corrections before it could be opened to the public.

“Whenever opening a new facility, testing is conducted to ensure the design, mechanical and electrical systems are operating to contract specifications before the city of Saskatoon can take ownership of the facility from the contractor,” said Humphreys.

During that time, the leisure services branch has been holding controlled swim sessions to train lifeguards and test emergency procedures at the new pool.

The grand opening of the new pool takes place next Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and will also commemorate Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee. The event will include free swimming, a barbeque, cake, entertainment, activities and a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The cost of replacing the old pool was around $5.5-million.
