A man with alleged links to the UN gang who is accused of conspiring to murder the Bacon brothers and their associates appeared in court Wednesday seeking to be released on bail.

B.C. Supreme Court Associate Chief Justice Austin Cullen imposed a publication ban on the evidence, submissions made and reasons for judgment given at the bail hearing for Amir Eghtesad.

The accused was arrested last August, a week following the gangland slaying of gangster Jonathan Bacon in Kelowna. The investigation is ongoing into the Bacon murder but no charges have been laid to date.

Eghtesad, 30, is charged with one count of conspiring to kill the Abbotsford brothers and their associates in the Red Scorpions gang.

Wearing a black shirt and blue jeans, the accused sat quietly in the prisoner’s dock during the hearing in Vancouver.

Members of his family sat in the public gallery behind him.

The hearing is expected to run for two days.

Eghtesad’s arrest came two years after eight UN gang members or associates were arrested and charged with conspiring to murder the same targets.

In January 2011, five of those accused – Dan Russell, Dilun Heng, Karwan Saed, Ion Kroitoru, Barzan Tilli-Cholli and Young Lee – were also charged with first-degree murder in the 2008 slaying of Jonathan Barber and the attempted murder of his girlfriend, Vicky King.

Cory “Frankie” Vallee is also charged in the Barber murder and attempted murder of King.

Vallee and Conor D’Monte – both of whom remain at large – have also been charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Red Scorpions member Kevin LeClair, who was a close friend of the Bacons.

The UN gang case remains in pre-trial hearings.
