Renée Zellweger, the darling of such films as Bridget Jones’s Diary and Jerry Maguire, practically disappeared off the Hollywood map between 2010 and 2016.

She recently resurfaced at red-carpet premieres and events, and is currently filming the sequel Bridget Jones’s Baby. But where did she go during those six years?

In an interview with Vogue UK magazine, Zellweger reveals that it was time to “go away and grow up a little bit,” adding that fatigue was the main impetus for taking a hiatus.

“As a creative person, saying no to that wonderful once-in-a-lifetime project is hard,” she said. “But I was fatigued and wasn’t taking the time I needed to recover between projects, and it caught up with me.”

“I got sick of the sound of my own voice,” she continued. “I found anonymity, so I could have exchanges with people on a human level and be seen and heard, not be defined by this image that precedes me when I walk into a room,” she continued. “You cannot be a good storyteller if you don’t have life experiences, and [if] you can’t relate to people.”

As for the scrutiny she’s been under since she reappeared on the red carpet looking “different,” Zellweger doesn’t have the time for it.

“I put on a few pounds,” she concedes. “I also put on some breasts and a baby bump. Bridget is a perfectly normal weight and I’ve never understood why it matters so much. No male actor would get such scrutiny if he did the same thing for a role.”

Bridget Jones’s Baby opens in theatres on Sept. 16, 2016.
