Kelowna apartment building evacuated after parkade fire spreads

KELOWNA — A vehicle is a total loss and the side of a Kelowna apartment building was scorched after a parkade fire in Rutland on Friday.

It was shortly after 4 p.m. that the Kelowna Fire Department (KFD) responded to the scene on Franklyn Road at Leathead Road.

There was a large response from the KFD and upon arrival crews found a vehicle fully involved in the parkade.

“[The flames were] impinging on the exterior of the building,” said Light.

“Quick action by fire crews limited damage to the building to some melted siding but no structural damage.”

Light said fire alarms alerted residents to the fire and RCMP helped to evacuate the building.

“[They] were allowed back into the building when CO levels returned to normal levels,” said Light.

“The vehicle fire was of an accidental nature.”

No one was injured in the incident.
