Take the wine with you: Airline encouraging passengers to pickup local vino

Pacific Coastal Airlines

Wine is big business in the Okanagan and one of the valley’s largest tourism industries. While it’s easy to come and taste local wines, for those flying into the valley, it isn’t so easy to take a bottle (or six) home.

Pacific Coastal Airlines is looking to change that by giving passengers flying into Kelowna a free portable wine box.

“It provides an easy solution for customers coming up for wine tours while showing our support of the local wine industry,” said Jenelle Hynes with Pacific Coastal Airlines.

Pacific Coastal has partnered with House of Rose, Vibrant Vine and The View wineries to launch the project. All three winery logos are also on the portable box.

“This is a unique program with our wineries and Pacific Coastal,” says Wyn Lewis with Vibrant Vine Winery. “It’s a great way to promote our wineries, and Okanagan wine in general, to the B.C. region and to travelers from outside the province.”

The boxes are considered part of your checked luggage, but stored separately from other baggage.

“We have a procedure in place. The boxes are taken out in bins to the aircraft and are secured behind netting,” said Hynes.

The first flight with the portable boxes took off today.
