MONTREAL – After a grisly accident that left a 77-year-old woman dead, the borough of Rosemont-La-Petite-Patrie announced a dozen of its major streets will now have a reduced speed limit of 30 km/h.

The senior was crushed by a truck at the intersection of Chambord Street and Rosemont Boulevard Tuesday.
Officials said the speed change has been in the works for months, citing reckless drivers, but it became all the more clear that something had to be done after the fatal accident.

“We want to make this a safe place to raise families,” said François William Croteau, the borough’s mayor.
Rosemont-La-Petite-Patrie isn’t the first borough to take action.

In May, representatives with the Plateau-Mont-Royal borough announced they would install speed bumps in several of its alleyways after an accident in the Sud-Ouest sent a toddler to hospital.
“This is something we can do,” said Luc Ferrandez, Plateau-Mont-Royal borough mayor at the time.
“We have the power to do it.”
The borough has already closed several alleys, either by having planters that only allow space for pedestrian or bicycle traffic, or by installing green corridors that look like small parks.
