WINNIPEG – The Winnipeg Goldeyes won their home opener for the second year in a row.

The Goldeyes defeated the Sioux Falls Canaries 3-2 at Shaw Park on Monday. Winnipeg has won three straight games after closing out their season opening 10-game road trip with back-to-back victories over the Lincoln Saltdogs.

Goldeyes starting pitcher Mikey O’Brien picked up the win as he improved to 3-0 on the season. He allowed two earned runs, on four hits over 5.2 innings of work. He also struck out six Canaries’ batters.

The Canaries pulled off a rare triple play in the bottom of the first inning. With men on first and second base, Josh Romanski hit a liner to first base. David Bergin snagged the ball for out number one. He touched the bag for out number two and then made the throw to second base for an unsual 3-6 triple play to end the Goldeyes’ rally.

Romanski would redeem himself in his very next at bat though. In the fourth inning Romanski cracked a pitch over the right field fence for his first home run of the season. A solo home run gave the Goldeyes their first lead of the game. A lead they would not relinquish en route to their seventh victory of the season.

David Rohm had a sacrifice fly for an RBI but saw his 10-game hitting streak come to an end as he went 0-for-2 at the plate.

Winnipeg used five different pitchers in the win and in seventh inning Goldeyes reliever Brandon Shimo picked off Frank Martinez at first base. Jailen Peguero pitched a scoreless ninth inning as he struck out the side for his second save of the season.

Canaries starter Misael Siverio lasted 7.1 innings and allowed three earned runs on eight hits in taking the loss.

The Goldeyes and Canaries play game two of the four game series on Tuesday with first pitch at 7:00pm.
