EDMONTON – Members at Devonshire Care Centre ratified a first collective agreement between the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees and their employer, Park Place Seniors Living on Wednesday.
The vote ratified a tentative agreement reached July 19 and affects approximately 180 nursing and other specialized seniors health care employees.
“We are pleased an agreement has been reached with the employer,” said AUPE President Guy Smith.

“We weren’t able to achieve everything we wanted to achieve, but this first collective agreement is an important initial step for members. Ultimately, the deal means more public dollars will be spent where they were meant to be spent – on front-line care for seniors.”
AUPE says the three-year agreement is retroactive to April 1, 2012 and brings wages in line with Alberta Health Services current rates of pay over the life of the agreement.
It adds members will also receive a health and wellness benefits package and RRSP plan.
The agreement was reached with the assistance of Edmonton lawyer, Andrew Sims Q.C. Sims also assisted in the agreement reached at Hardisty Care Centre, ending a two-month strike at that facility last week.
Vancouver-based Park Place Seniors Living Inc. owns both Devonshire Care Centre and Hardisty Care Centre.
The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees is Alberta’s largest union with close to 80,000 working Albertans. Almost half work in public, private and not, for profit health care.
