WINNIPEG — They want to be the fastest. Those training the Hedges Middle School Running Club though have a different want.

“We want to hang out with them,” said organizer Rowland Hayward. “We want them to be healthy and we want them to get outdoors.”

Hayward helps keep the running club running. He’s been in charge of the group ever since he started it nine years ago.

“Since he’s taken it up, it’s blossomed,” said volunteer Howard Tokar.

“He’s kept it going year after year. He’s really good at arranging things and everything.”

Working alongside Hayward is a team of six. The leaders meet twice a week before school starts. Their goal is to simply get kids going.

“It’s really hard to get off the couch in the mornings or in general,” said volunteer Gwen Browne. “If they have a club to join and have a social aspect, it might help them out a bit.”

But their days aren’t just filled with sprints. There’s also papers to be signed and fruits for snacks to be sliced. Tiny tasks to help Hedges’ runners stay on track.

“It means that they actually care about us getting better and staying fit,” said running club member Paul Olatunji.

All while keeping a pleasant pace.

“We have Mr. Hayward who’s really fun and outgoing,” said student Ana Leask. “All the other teachers too. They bring the club together and make it fun for everybody.”

Hedges Middle School is one of 100 schools participating in this year’s Manitoba Marathon Champions in Training program. The goal is to introduce kids to an active lifestyle.

The Manitoba Marathon takes place June 19.
