Some big changes are coming to taxi cab companies in Calgary.

The changes go into effect on October 1st, 2012.

The last time rates were adjusted was in July of 2008.

The increase in fares will allow taxi drivers to keep pace with higher operating expenses.

The departure fee for a cab leaving the airport is also increasing from $3 to $4 a trip.

Meanwhile, cab companies have until July 2013 to install cameras in every taxi.

Council approved that plan on Monday.

Currently, about 75 per cent of all city cabs have cameras.

Most have been installed by taxi companies, at a cost of about $500,000.

Taxi companies say drivers prefer the cameras over protective shields in their vehicles.
