Storm hammers Winnipeg and parts of southern Manitoba

Manitobans are in clean-up-mode Monday after a fierce storm ripped through the city and other parts of southern Manitoba Sunday night.

The dark clouds rolled in just before 6:00 p.m. and were gone by around 7:30 p.m. The quick storm left a path of damage and debris behind. Several trees and hydro poles snapped from the powerful winds.

The James Armstrong Richardson International Airport reported wind gusts of up to 98 kilometres per hour. In St. Laurent, Environment Canada reported wind gusts up to 150 kilometres per hour.

Power outages hit hundreds of homes in Winnipeg, according to Manitoba Hydro. Areas of St Boniface, Wilkes and McGillivray areas and River Heights are specific were still dealing with power outages into Monday morning.

Outside of Winnipeg, 1,000 people are without power Monday in St. Laurent. Hydro said it could take up to 24 hours for that outage to be fixed. Hydro encourages people to report downed power lines and trees.
