Reid Roberts is recovering after a run-in with a black bear Tuesday. The Prince George teacher was running around the University of Northern British Columbia campus when he surprised a sow and two cubs.
The wounds he suffered are significant but it could have been much worse. The bear came at Roberts twice but his dog Pacer came to the rescue, biting at the bear to give Roberts enough time to duck for cover.

Pacer escaped unharmed and was found a few kilometres away at a friend’s house.
Despite the close encounter, Roberts is back at work and is rather blasé about the whole ordeal.
“I was calm when it happened and I still feel calm now. I feel like, let’s go running and back to the trails,” he said.
Conservation officers put the mother bear down. The two cubs were tranquilized and relocated to a bear rehabilitation centre in Smithers.
