Ontario Provincial Police have charged a Quebec man in connection to a fatal wheel-off collision on Highway 400 on Jan. 27.

A transport truck was travelling south on the highway just north of King Road around 9:19 a.m. when a set of dual wheels broke free from the truck. Police say the wheels flew into the northbound lane where it struck an SUV.

The driver of that vehicle was 69-year-old Paul Philip Koenderman. He was taken to hospital where he later died.

Police have identified the transport truck driver as Bruno Bergeron, 30, from Rouyn-Noranda, Que.

Bergeron has been charged with criminal negligence causing death.

He is scheduled to appear in court in Newmarket on June 14.

Police have also laid charges against the Bearn, Quebec-based company that owns truck.

Transport Leo Labelle Inc. has been charged with an offence of wheel separation and will appear in Newmarket court on July 22.
