Safety tips: Blue-green algae

Although many people have become ill from exposure to freshwater cyanobacterial toxins, death from contaminated drinking water is uncommon.

Still, no one enjoys coming into contact with a poisonous substance – so here are a few ways to keep limit exposure and keep safe.

1. Avoid contact with lake water
Many lakes are contaminated with blue-green algae and swimming or bathing in the water may lead to skin irritation and rashes. Avoid recreational activities like canoeing, water skiing, windsurfing, or kayaking on lakes with blue-algae and don’t use this lake water for showering or bathing.

2. Do not drink lake water
Health officials advise that people do not drink directly from lakes and ponds.

3. Don’t rely on boiling water
Although many believe that boiling water makes it safe to drink, boiling water does not eliminate blue-green algae toxins.

4. Don’t use lake water for cooking or laundry
Don’t use contaminated water for washing clothes or dishes and don’t use lake water to prepare or cook food. If no alternative water supply is available, use rubber gloves to avoid direct contact with the water.

5. Avoid eating fish from contaminated water
Use caution when eating fish caught in water where there are major blue-green algal blooms and definitely avoid eating the fish innards, where toxins are particularly present.

6. Remember animals are like people
Just like people, your pets can be affected by contact with contaminated water. All the above tips apply to animals!

If you suspect you might have come into contact with cyanobacterial toxins and are experiencing any symptoms like headache, fever, vomiting, diarrhea; rinse any scum off your body and immediately consult your doctor.
