SASKATOON – Former NHL players laced up for Saskatchewan’s first “Heart&Stroke Hockey Heroes Weekend.” Nearly $130,000 was raised to support research and programs that bring hope to heart disease and stroke patients.

The experience gave donors a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play hockey and hang out with eight NHL alumni, while raising life-saving funds.

“It’s great … it’s Canada’s game, we’re the best at it and any time you can use it to help raise money in a fun way,” said former Toronto Maple Leafs captain Wendel Clark, at Jemini arena this past weekend.

“Us as alumni, we come out, we have fun, we’ll hopefully be a little bit of entertainment for the guys and the guys that raised the money and they’re the true heroes.”

Over 120 participants came together in Saskatoon for a round robin tournament to help the Heart and Stroke Foundation make a more tangible impact on Canadian families by preventing disease, saving lives and promoting recovery.

“We are overwhelmed with the incredible outpouring of support from this great community,” said foundation CEO Lorie Langenfurth.

“Because of their passion for our cause, we can continue to invest in the best medical minds in the world – research that has the potential to change our future.”

Saskatchewan’s next Heart&Stroke Hockey Heroes Weekend fundraiser will be in April 2017 and the event is already half sold out. Interested parties can contact Pamela Hujber at hujberp@hsf.sk.ca.
