SASKATOON – Wayne and Marie Oscvirk have opted for some golden onion rings instead of traditional gold for their fiftieth wedding anniversary. The couple first met in 1964 at the A&W drive-in on 8th Street in Saskatoon and have come back every year since.
For their anniversary on Saturday, family and friends helped the couple recreate the era they met, with classic 60s cars and music. A lot has changed along 8th Street in five decades, but the Oscvirks insist the burgers have stayed the same.
“I still thank my friend for introducing us,” said Marie.
“He laughs, but I say really, it’s the best thing that ever happened to me.”

The couple’s daughter, Cybelle Oscvirk, organized the day for her parents. She got emotional talking about her parents’ relationship this weekend.
“My parents showed me it takes a lot of work and commitment to work through relationships, and they’ve done that.”
She believes her parents are soulmates and seeing their relationship pushed her to never settle when it comes to love.
“When you meet the man that you love … you have to work at your relationship,” said Marie.
“It just doesn’t come to you on a platter. You have your ups and downs, but life is great. It goes by so fast, our 50 years feels like five minutes!”
Although A&W no longer has carhops, the company still keeps its ties to the era that defined fast food. Darren Ardell is the director of operations at the A&W, and was more than happy to help the family organize the anniversary celebration.
“Being a Canadian company, it’s just neat that there is still that connection to back in the day to today,” said Ardell, who is glad the company can hold on to a “Prairie feel.”
Wayne and Marie plan to keep coming back to the A&W where they met and remember the day that shaped their lives.
