REGINA – A long-time staple in Regina has been missing for years, but Dickie Dee ice cream carts are back on city streets.
“It’s been years, years,” resident Amanda Snell said.
For many residents it’s unimaginable that Dickie Dee left the city 12 years ago.
“My 12 and two year-old have never seen one,” Snell added.
The company admits it needed to take some time away.
“It was unsafe for our staff to be working here. We felt that it would be better to leave Regina at that time,” Project Manager Tia Mederios said, adding the company is delighted to be back. “There’s people that are just craving the experience of running after that truck and saying wait, wait, wait!”
Dickie Dee cart driver Joseph Edwards says while most people think it’s kids that get the most excited, it’s actually the adults.
“It’s not the kids, it’s the adults. I’ve had six adults run after my cart to grab ice cream. It’s because they haven’t seen in it 12 years.”
However, for many people it’s a feeling of nostalgia and an emotional trip down memory lane.
“I remember them ringing their bell and us running out of the house to get some ice cream,” resident Erica Berg recounted.
“I think it’s good, it reminds me of being a kid. Wascana park right, you’d always see them in Wascana park,” Snell said.
Now the company has six bikes and one truck and they say residents can expect to see Dickie Dee all around the city this summer.
“Residential, industrial, business, everywhere,” Medeiros said.
