KATY, Texas – A recently fired employee opened fire at a transportation company near Houston on Wednesday, killing one employee and injuring another before fatally shooting himself, sheriff’s officials said.

The gunman was fired earlier in the day and then returned with a shotgun to the Knight Transportation office in Katy, about 20 miles west of Houston, said Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman.

“He parked right outside the building and came straight in,” the sheriff said.

Hickman said the man opened fire and fatally shot one person, who was found dead at the scene by responding officers. Another person was injured during the shooting, though the person wasn’t shot and declined medical treatment, the sheriff said.

The sheriff didn’t release the name of the gunman or the victims. He also had no information how long the man had been employed by the Phoenix-based company.

Numerous patrol vehicles are surrounding the facility. At least one nearby school was briefly locked down as a precaution.

A message left with Knight Transportation also wasn’t immediately returned. The company provides truckload transportation services.
