Ten Manitobans heading to Special Olympics World Winter Games

WINNIPEG — Special Olympics Manitoba will send seven athletes and three coaches to next year’s World Winter Games in Austria.

Team Canada released its roster for the event on Tuesday. Athletes were chosen based on their performance at the Special Olympics Canada 2016 Winter Games in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Manitobans Darren Boryskavich, Valerie Delorme and Christine Peters will all compete in snowshoeing. The three athletes will be coached by Winnipegger Joanne Zahaiko and Winkler’s Sabrina Klassen.

Canada’s floor hockey team will include Elijah Ilag, Ryan Kneisz and Adam Lloyd. All three players call Winnipeg home.

Winnipegger Michael Milani will represent the country in alpine skiing. His assistant coach, Ron Struch, is also from Manitoba.

The 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games will take place from March 14 to 25, 2017.
