SASKATOON – A water main break is causing water discolouration in six eastside Saskatoon neighbourhoods. The affected neighbourhoods are Lakewood, Lakeridge, Lakeview, Wildwood, Briarwood and Rosewood.

According to a release from the city, an extensive water main break took place Sunday evening on Pawlychenko Lane in Lakewood.

The city says the break occurred very close to a primary water main, where pressure is highest. This pressure stirred up particles that settled through the distribution lines over time.

While the water is safe, the city says it may contain small particles of calcium carbonate and naturally occurring deposits that give it a rusty taste and it is not the best for consumption. Water quality testing is also taking place to ensure there are no other concerns.

Water discolouration has happened primarily along or adjacent to Taylor Street, Nemeiben Road and Slimmon Road. People who live in these areas are being asked not to use discoloured water for drinking, preparing food and beverages, or laundry.

Officials say people with cloudy or rust-coloured water should run a cold water tap, preferably in a bathtub, for five minutes to clear the sediments causing the discoloured water.

If that doesn’t clear the system, people should wait for one hour and try again. If water discolouration remains after three five-minute cycles, those affected should contact the city at 306-975-2476.

If your water is clear, then you have not been affected.

Crews are flushing the water distribution system to return water quality to normal and water is expected to be restored to the two affected condominium buildings.

Condo residents are advised to boil their water until they receive a green drinking water advisory lifted notice.
