The fire danger in parts of Saskatchewan is extreme because of dry conditions. That includes north of Prince Albert, where the RM of Paddockwood has issued a fire ban after two threatening grass fires on Saturday.

Crews from Lakeland & District Fire Department were called to the first fire around 1 p.m. CT 17 kilometres west of Christopher Lake were a 20 acre fire was threatening a house. Firefighters were able to protect the valuables but 25 cords of wood used for winter heating were destroyed.

Just over an hour later, crews were called to the second fire about six kilometres east of Northside. A 40 acre grass fire had consumed over 20 vehicles, farm implements and scrap metal and was threatening a nearby home.

The fire grew to 160 acres and crews worked for several hours to save the home.

Twice firefighters had to withdraw because of explosions and safety concerns but eventually they got it under control.

The area is right on the edge of cottage country near Christopher and Emma lakes.
