A large fire in Dartmouth on Sunday extensively damaged both units of a duplex and spread to a neighbouring house.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at around 5 p.m. on Regent Avenue.

Smoke could be seen billowing from blocks away and the road was shut down by police as crews battled the fire.

A neighbour who called 911 told Global News he heard a loud bang and saw quick-moving flames bursting from the duplex.

All the occupants had gotten out safely by the time crews arrived. Fire officials say there are conflicting reports on how many residents live in the building.

“There was a tremendous amount of fire,” said Acting Division Commander Ben David of Halifax Regional Fire & Rescue.

“We started with exterior operations only and once we got it contained a bit more, then crews were inside and then the fire by then was inside the walls and inside the ceilings and we were able to pull them apart and get at the fire that was concealed.”

Unit 26A suffered extensive fire damage and is described as uninhabitable, while unit 26B suffered smoke and water damage.

“Investigation isn’t here yet so we don’t quite know but know the fire might have started in the unit 26A and until we’re through their investigation, we’re not going to know for sure,” said David.

The fire also spread to a neighbouring house, melting siding on the home and destroying a shed.

Crews were putting out flare-ups into the evening. Fire investigators will be looking for the cause and origin of the blaze.
