Regina INAC office reopens as protestors continue camping outside

REGINA – After being closed for over a week, the Indigenous and Northern Affairs Office (INAC) in Regina is once again open on Albert Street.

The “Colonialism no More” protestors are still camping outside the building.

They say after a Tuesday meeting INAC officials agreed to reopen the office.

The protestors are staying until they see “concrete action” to address systemic on and off reserve issues.

They are part of a network of protesters in cities across Canada that occupied INAC offices in the wake of the suicide tragedy in Attawapiskat.

The protestors say they’re in a “courteous” dialogue. with INAC.

“When we’re too busy worrying about pleases and thank you’s, sometimes nothing gets done. So hopefully they’re ready to not only show us courtesy but to actually act on what needs to happen,” protest organizer Robyn Pitawanakwat said.

A request for comment from INAC was not returned.

Pitawanakwat said their first demand was to reopen the office. Now that it is open she said the group will reveal more demands in the coming days.
