According to a report by the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA), Vancouver scored badly on Internet performance compared to other Canadian cities.
Coming in at number 19, Vancouver is one of the last ones on the 25-city list, but Toronto and Ottawa took the top two places.
Looking at provinces, New Brunswick led the way with an average download of 26.98 megabytes per second (Mbps), while the Yukon Territory had the lowest at 6.68 Mbps.
The report also compares urban versus rural communities, showing the latter are about 25 per cent behind when it comes to internet access.
According to CIRA, Canada ranks 13th out of 92 countries on the Berkman Center for Internet and Society’s Internet Monitor.
CIRA collected data from users across Canada in more than 126,000 tests to compile the report.
“There is a growing national consensus in Canada that access to fast, reliable and affordable Internet service is not only critical to economic development, but also represents an important social good,” reads the report.
The tests were based on speed, but also on dozens of different measures to study the connection.
The organization has collected more than 140,000 tests to date and will continue to do so to release reports more regularly.
