The Fredericton Convention Centre (FCC) says it saw an increase in delegates and direct economic impact in 2015.

A release from FCC says delegate attendance in 2015 was up 33 per cent over the previous year, to a total of 31,500.

There were 253 distinct events, and delegates occupied an estimated 23,800 room-nights in the city.

According to FCC, the direct economic impact of the Centre was $9.6 million for 2015. That’s up 12 per cent over 2014 results, and the highest since the Centre opened in 2011.

In October, Fredericton City Council formally approved an agreement to build a new hotel next to the Convention Centre. The estimated cost is $20 million, and is expected to open by the end of 2017.

The FCC says the new hotel will further drive business in the future.

“Since the announcement of the new hotel, we’ve confirmed additional conferences in 2018 and 2019 who required the new bedroom availability,” said Cathy Pugh, General Manager of the Fredericton Convention Centre.

“National events often have a requirement for walking-distance hotel space, and we can now meet that condition.”

The FCC says delegates attending national association events spend an average of $324 per day. Since opening in 2011, the Centre has contributed more than $38 million in economic impact to Fredericton.
