Courchesne has no plan to run in next election

MONTREAL – Education Minister Michelle Courchesne has confirmed she won’t run in the next provincial election.

“After several months of reflection and nine years in the government she won’t seek another mandate,” Sébastien Lachaine, a spokesperson for Courchesne said on Monday.

Courchesne intends to keep serving the citizens in her riding and to assume her functions of deputy premier, Education Minister and Treasury Board president until the end of the government’s mandate, Lachaine said.

With speculation rife that Quebec Premier Jean Charest may call an election this summer, Courchesne, 59, had been rumoured to be thinking of not running again.

She was first elected in 2003 in the Laval riding of Fabre and named to cabinet.

She has held several portfolios over the years, including Education twice.

She landed back in the role in May in the midst of the government’s conflict with students over tuition fee hikes after former Education Minister Line Beauchamp resigned.

Courchesne was also named deputy premier following Beauchamp’s departure.
