Mike Simmonds, Saskatoon advocate for the blind, passes away

SASKATOON – Friends and family are mourning the loss of Mike Simmonds. Simmonds, 50, passed away Monday night in Saskatoon.

He was a strong advocate for the blind and was known as the blind comedian in his stand-up comedy.

He is best known for spearheading the change that now requires all taxis to allow seeing-eye dogs and service dogs to ride inside with their owners.

Simmonds also spread the word about blind hockey through his love for the sport.

The local chapter of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind says Simmond’s presence and advocacy will be greatly missed in Saskatoon and Saskatchewan.
