Artists paint mural by Kelowna beach

They are armed with paintbrushes and they are not afraid to use them. On Saturday, a group of Okanagan artists took their skills to the beach.

A group of high school art students, along with two organizing Vancouver-based artists, plotted the design of a multicultural mural onto a building at Hot Sands Beach in downtown Kelowna.

The group says public art is important to the community.

“It’s something the community can enjoy visually,” said mural artist David James DOody. “It really contextualizes the space it is in so in this particular space, being at the beach, we just really wanted to create something that would be the spark of what the joy is at being at the beach.”

“Each kid will bring sort of their own interpretation and add their own style to it,” said Renee Burgess, public programming head at the Kelowna Art Gallery.

“With the bridge right there, everyone will be able to see it,” said high school art student Prabjit Khunkhun. “Everyone on the beach can enjoy it.”

“I think it brightens up the beach. It brings everybody more together,” said fellow high school art student Megan Cameron.

The mural started to take shape on Saturday afternoon but the painters expect to work on the project through the weekend.

The project is a collaboration between the Kelowna Art Gallery and the City of Kelowna.
