Global News Edmonton nabs 4 wins at RTDNA Prairie Regional Awards

Global News Edmonton was honoured with awards in four different categories at the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) Canada’s Prairie Regional Awards in Medicine Hat, Alta. Saturday night.

Global News Edmonton was given the Charlie Edwards Award for Spot News for its coverage of a deadly robbery spree in December that left two Mac’s convenience store clerks dead and triggered calls for the government to re-evaluate its workplace safety legislation for people who work alone on overnight shifts.

Global Edmonton also accepted the Sports Award (Large Market) for reporter John Sexsmith’s profile of an Edmonton mother who keeps busy juggling her children’s sports schedules.

Bob Layton’s video editorial, in which he combined a discussion about Alberta’s economic struggles with former premier Jim Prentice’s now infamous “look in the mirror” comments, captured the Sam Ross Award for editorials and commentary.

And Gord Steinke, the anchor of Global News at 5 Edmonton and co-anchor of Global News Hour at 6 Edmonton, was given the RTDNA’s Prairie Region Lifetime Achievement Award.

Steinke has spent the past 24 years working at Global News Edmonton.

Global News Calgary won the Gord Sinclair Award for live special events for Decision Alberta 2015, its coverage of the historic 2015 provincial election won by Alberta’s News Democrats, ending the Progressive Conservative party’s 44 years in power. The election special included work from employees of both Global News Edmonton and Global News Lethbridge as well.
