A Queen’s Bench justice sentenced three people convicted of killing Ryan Lane to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years.

In handing down the sentence Friday, which is automatic for a conviction of first-degree murder, Justice Alan Macleod said Lane’s killing was “the most callous and cold-hearted act imaginable.”

Earlier, tears flowed as Lane’s family members read victim impact statements, describing how the loss has affected their lives.

Lane was last seen alive a little more than four years ago after receiving a mystery call from someone asking him to meet about the custody of his daughter.

His charred remains were eventually found in a burn barrel at a gravel pit outside of Calgary.

A jury agreed the trio planned and carried out his murder.

The Rempel brothers were also convicted of kidnapping Lane.

“I am broken, weak and lost,” Lorraine Jackson, Lane’s mother, read from her victim impact statement.

“The pain overwhelmed me…I have my memories and I have my dreams, but I don’t have him.”

“I do not forgive them – I will never forgive them,” Lane’s mother said.

She said she finds comfort spending time with Lane’s daughter – the “little girl” who her son was fighting to see.

It was alleged Lane was killed because he wanted custody.

Lane’s sister broke down as she told court, “what really haunts me is what happened to Ryan, and he did not deserve it.”

Meagan Lane described how her life fell apart when she lost her brother. She told the court she also lost her job, and her marriage failed.

But she said she’s choosing to embrace her freedom knowing they [the convicted trio] will now have no freedom.

Cuthill and the Rempel brothers will receive an automatic life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years.

Before the sentence was handed down, Cuthill told the court: “I do not expect his family to forgive me…I am truly sorry for the loss of Ryan.”
