REGINA – Although housing construction is on the decline, students at the Regina Trades and Skills Centre (RTSC) still had plenty of work to do.

Students spent the past two days putting on a new roof for a Regina resident going through tough times.

“She’s a very humble individual and she never came in and asked for it”, RTSC’s Melissa Dobrowolski said.

The lucky recipient was Judy Livingstone, who had needed a new roof for three years.

“First it started with just a little leak, that was one year, just a little leak”, Livingstone explained.

“So you just make sure you got the buckets where it’s supposed to be when it rains.”

The single mother’s finances were tight, and the problem became even worse.

“It seemed like something else broke, the car broke and you need it for work. Then, the furnace went and you need that”, Livingstone sheepishly revealed.

Then the RTSC became aware of her plight. “One of our program coordinators knew her situation and knew the opportunity that was there”, Dobrowolski said.

It was an opportunity to help someone in need, but also give trade students valuable real world experience.

“You can be drilled something theoretically over and over, but for me, until you get out and actually do it.”

“You have all the time to practice, and like you have the confidence”, Residential Roofing Student Shauntel Blancher said.

According to Wheatland Roofing, the project would have cost Livingstone approximately $6,000 to $8,000 but both labour and materials were provided free of charge.

“They were looking for donations for a family that was in need. We always want to be a part of the community. Anyway we can help out, we do”, Wheatland Roofing’s Victoria Scudder said.

And the results? She’s now looking forward to the next rainy day.

“I just feel like I won the lottery, I really do.”

“There’s no gaps or leakage or nothing. It looks so nice, Almost makes the house look brand new”, she exclaimed.
