Game of Thrones Season 6 is almost upon us, but the latest announcement from showrunners should make audiences appreciate the show even more.
In an interview with Variety, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss speculated that Game of Thrones Seasons 7 and 8 — its final two seasons — will have fewer episodes than the usual 10. The current plan is to have seven episodes for Season 7, and six for Season 8 (the anticipated finale).

Benioff and Weiss said it’s a consequence of the show’s increasing scope and size, coupled with highly demanding production needs.
“I think we’re down to our final 13 episodes after this season,” said Benioff. “We’re heading into the final lap. That’s the guess, though nothing is yet set in stone, but that’s what we’re looking at.”
Of course, the projected number of episodes is premature, and production of Season 7 doesn’t begin until July 2016, so things could change and shift before then.

Still, Benioff and Weiss insist that the show is far too dense for them to do 10 episodes per season anymore.
“It’s crossing out of a television schedule into more of a mid-range movie schedule,” said Weiss.
‘Game of Thrones’ Season 6 premieres on April 24.
