Saskatchewan building permit value sets May record

The value of building permits issued in Saskatchewan during May set a record for the month. 

Statistics Canada says the overall value was $385.1-million, an increase of 66.9 per cent from April and up 87.5 per cent from May 2011. 

There was a big jump in the value of non-residential permits.

Those were valued at $221.8-million, up 258.8 per cent from April and 125.2 per cent from last May. 

Resident building permits were valued at $163.2-million, down slightly from the previous month but up 52.8 per cent from a year ago. 

Economy Minister Bill Boyd says the numbers are good for the province as it attracts skilled labourers to the province. 

In Saskatoon, the value of the building permits issued was just over $191-million, up 70.3 per cent from April and 71.2 per cent from a year ago.
