Saskatoon police dogs help catch suspects fleeing officers in Vanscoy

SASKATOON – The pursuit of a vehicle full of people who attempted to evade Saskatoon police officers on Saturday came to an end in Vanscoy. Five people are now in custody.

At around 1:50 p.m. CT, police received a call about a vehicle chasing a small child on a bicycle in the 1500-block of 19th Street West. The area was checked by officers but no one was found.

Officers located the suspect vehicle at around 2:35 p.m. near Avenue H and 19th Street and attempted to stop it; however, the driver evaded police and headed towards Highway 7.

Once on the highway, the vehicle began travelling very fast westbound in the eastbound lane. Police said they ended the pursuit for safety reasons.

The vehicle was found a short time later at a gas station in Vanscoy. With the help of the Saskatoon police canine unit a 28-year-old man was taken into custody along with a 29-year-old woman.

The vehicle, which was still occupied, sped away for a second time but was found again a few blocks away. A second police dog was brought in and began a search which led to a 21-year-old woman and two other men being apprehended.

The two men, ages 26 and 31, were injured by police dog bites and taken to hospital.

The 26-year-old man was arrested on a Canada-wide warrant for breach of statutory release while the 21-year-old woman was arrested for breaching probation.

Police say further charges are pending.
