Reports of tornadoes in Alberta, Saskatchewan; no injuries, some damage

EDMONTON – Stormy weather across central Alberta and southern Saskatchewan has spawned reports of five tornadoes.

Meteorologist Louis Kohanyi with Environment Canada says they received calls Tuesday about tornadoes touching down in Alberta west of Didsbury and near Halkirk.

“The report said that witnesses saw a tornado coming down and touching down, a roof was torn off a house, trees were thrown around, a barn was damaged and as well there were reports of injuries to cattle,” Kohanyi said of the tornado west of Didsbury and south of Olds.

Kevin Heppler, a peace officer with Mountain View County, said the tornado touched down around Bergen Road and Range Road 25.

“It didn’t last long and we’re currently assessing the situation,” said Heppler. “We’ve heard trees were down and couple hay sheds, things like that.”

In Saskatchewan, tornadoes were reported west of Davidson, southwest of Watrous, and southwest of Quill Lake. There were no reports of injuries or major damage.

Mounties told Environment Canada said near Watrous, the roof was torn off an old barn and trees had their leaves stripped off.

Kohanyi says all of the tornadoes reported are so far unconfirmed.

There were tornado warnings in place Tuesday afternoon and evening for many areas in central and southern Saskatchewan, and severe thunderstorm warnings and watches in Alberta.

The central Alberta city of Red Deer was hit with a torrential downpour Tuesday afternoon. It flooded numerous parking lots, streets and businesses in Red Deer within an hour’s period.

A couple of vehicles were observed floating on one city street, while some businesses had to temporarily shut down due to flooding, including Real Canadian Superstore in downtown Red Deer.

Dan Hachey, general manager of Parkland Mall, said rainwater gushed up from the drains and into some of the stores.

Environment Canada issued rainfall warnings for areas northwest and northeast of Alberta for Tuesday.
