SaskPower back to normal, commits $10-billion on infrastructure

SaskPower says normal operations have resumed following numerous power outages throughout Saskatchewan after storms tore across the province last week.

Eleven high-voltage transmission lines went down in rural Saskatchewan, leaving tens of thousands of people without power.

“It’s fair to say this outage was unprecedented in our history because of its reach,” said Robert Watson, SaskPower CEO and President.

“I want to sincerely thank SaskPower customers for their patience and understanding.”

Around 500 linemen worked in the field to restore power and the outage management centre averaged 2,500-3,000 calls per hour.

At the same time, the Crown Corporation announced a $10-billion infusion over the next 10 years to maintain and improve its infrastructure.

This will include the installation of 500-thousand smart metres by the end of 2014.
