Montreal blue collar workers donate time to raise money for the homeless

MONTREAL – Dollar by dollar, the donations are rolling in as Montreal’s blue collar workers raise money for the city’s homeless.

The workers headed into the metro system Tuesday, volunteering their time for Accueil Bonneau, an organization that aims to take care of the homeless, as well as those at risk of being left out on the streets.

The organization hopes to raise $15,000 to cover food costs for an entire year.

Every day, Accueil Bonneau feeds about 700 of Montreal’s homeless.

The group also provides health and outreach services and shelter for those who have nowhere to go.

“As a blue collar worker, we’re in the streets and every day, we see people who need to be taken care of,” said worker Jacques Rochon.

This is the eleventh year the metro fundraiser has taken place.

“Helping a homeless person needs a lot of time and a lot of energy,” said Tremblay.

Nearly 100 volunteers donated their time in the hopes that Montrealers will give a little money.

“We are a small team and we can’t be everywhere,” said Tremblay.

“To have this help for one day is a really good day for us.”
