A new report says Nova Scotia’s regulated child care system needs to increase hourly pay rates for early childhood workers who are the lowest paid in the country.
The Education Department report makes 18 recommendations aimed at improving a system it says needs to be made more affordable and accessible.

It says workers in Nova Scotia earn $12.84 an hour, while the highest paid workers in Quebec earn $19.30 an hour.
The report also calls for a boost to subsidy rates for low income parents, which it says are also the lowest in Canada.
Among the other problems identified in the system are a lack of daycare spaces and training for staff.
Education Minister Karen Casey has accepted all of the recommendations but she won’t say what steps will be taken until after the provincial budget is tabled on April 19.
