REGINA – With just days until voters head to the polls April 4th, Global News will profile different political party leaders in the province.
On Wednesday Teri Fikowski sat down with NDP leader Cam Broten.
Q: In the last few days before voters head to the polls, where is your focus? Cities or rural areas?
A: All over the province. I’ve been travelling throughout Saskatchewan for the whole campaign and I’ll continue to that and I know our campaign teams throughout Saskatchewan are energized, working hard and feeling great.
Q: There’s been some changes since the beginning of the 27 day campaign. With social media incidents you’ve lost a few candidates and your campaign manager. Has your strategy changed from then until now?
A: No, we’re focused on what we’re hearing on the doors steps – the things that families care about. About how we have the best health care and education for our families. How we can cut SaskParty waste and fix the services we need. What families are really concerned about is the fact that Brad Wall is hiding his budget. It should have been delivered. We should know what’s going to happen if that’s his plan and he’s not talking about that. We’ve seen cuts already and families are worried about what cuts will be next.

Q: On the topic of finances the SaskParty claims the NDP’s platform has 18 promises that have not been costed estimating around $18 billion. Your response?
A: It’s simply not correct what they’re saying. Mr. Wall would like to talk about anything other than the budget he’s hiding and the cuts that are coming. So, he’s throwing things out there to try and change the channel. Fact of the matter is he should have presented a budget and people should know what’s going on. Our platform is fully costed and it’s hidden away in a really secret place called…the internet.
Q: What influence do you factors outside of the province play? In terms that the federal NDP lost seats in the election and next door in Alberta there was a historic win but now some people now question certain policies.
A: People in Saskatchewan pay attention what’s going on nationally but if you look how the NDP did here federally, we picked up seats, we added members of parliament to parliament. So, that was good growth that we had and I’m getting great feedback as we travel. What families talk about and care about is provincial issues in a big way. It’s about health care, it’s about education, it’s about roads, it’s about a lot of the taxes they pay, and affordability through our utilities. They’re concerned that Mr.Wall is hiding his wallet and if he won’t trust Saskatchewan people with the details of his budget how on earth does he expect them to trust him with their votes?
On weekends a common thing we do is make waffles together.
Q: For someone who maybe has been tuned out of this election campaign so far, what does the NDP have to offer them?
A: My plan is to cut the SaskParty’s waste. Things like the gravy planes, the luxury jets, cut the use of out of province consultants in a big way and redirect those dollars to fix things like health care, to hire more nurses and more care aids. That’s what we’re about. When times are tight who can you trust to protect health care and education? That’s my pledge to protect those things for our families.
Q: What is something about Cam Broten that people might not know?
A: Well, we’re expecting another baby in the summer as well so it will be a really full house…We’re thrilled about the new one coming! I love being with my kids obviously, any chance I get. But especially on weekends a common thing we do is make waffles together. We’ll load them up on a tray and take them up to mom. Even though she’s awake she knows she has to wait until the waffles come. But then that means you have to change all the sheets and blankets because it becomes quite a mess.
