Charges against driver unlikely after teenager hit crossing street

Teenager hit by vehicle while crossing the street along Temple Drive NE. Global News

CALGARY- A 17-year-old girl was rushed to hospital with serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle while crossing the street in the northeast. Early in their investigation, police said charges are unlikely against the driver.

It happened just after 9 a.m. on Temple Drive approaching 52 Street NE.

Sgt. Joerg Gottschling with the Calgary Police Traffic Section explained what happened.

“From what we understand a male and female exited the parked white pickup truck. The female got out and walked behind the truck, between parked cars and walked directly into the path of the little brown Hyundai being driven by a 35-year-old driver.”

Gottschling said it didn’t look like the driver was at fault.

“Judging by how quickly he brought his vehicle to a stop, we don’t think he was travelling at any excessive rate of speed,” Gottschling said.

“It’s up to the pedestrian to look both ways and make sure it’s safe to cross the road. She was not in the crosswalk,” he explained.

He also said the pedestrian who was hit will not be charged since she’s recovering from serious injuries.

Calgary EMS said the teen was taken to Foothills Hospital with head and leg injuries as well as other soft tissue injuries.

Police continue to investigate.
