SilverStar freestyle event canceled due to lack of interest

VERNON – SilverStar’s Showdown Throwdown Hoedown was scheduled to go down this weekend. However, the competition for freestyle skiers and snowboarders has been canceled this year because not enough people signed up.

The skill hill is blaming the lack of interest on the fact the event wasn’t sanctioned to award the points competitors use to move up to higher level competitions.

“The event’s organizers decided not to get the event sanctioned so this year’s event was not a points event and there [is] another event that was taking place in another part of British Columbia that is a points event and slope style has become so popular with the youth because it is a new Olympic sport,” says SilverStar spokesperson Erik Kalacis.

“Every kid that rides in a terrain park has dreams of becoming an Olympian so a lot of the kids are heading to events that are sanctioned with points and unfortunately ours wasn’t this year.”

Kalacis says going forward SilverStar plans to have the event sanctioned so it can award points.

Meanwhile, it seems the hill is doing better when it comes to recreational visits this spring break. Kalacis says the number of skiers and the number of overnight stays are both up this year compared to spring break of 2015.
