Calgary Zoo gives ‘Easter Eggstravaganza’ a greener twist
WATCH ABOVE: The Easter long weekend is always bustling at the Calgary Zoo. Every year, tens of thousands of visitors attend the “Easter Eggstravaganza”. But as Sarah Offin reports there's a new initiative this time round - aimed at keeping Easter bunnies and the planet hopping right along – Mar 25, 2016

The Calgary Zoo is launching their three-stream recycling program by giving visitors their first crack at sorting.

The “bin-it-to-win-it” activity at Easter Eggstravaganza challenges visitors to dispose of waste, recycling and compost using the new three-bin sorting system.

The zoo is partnering with a private company they say will recycle even more materials than Calgarians might be used to.

“Because of the partners that we’re working with we’re able to compost items like, say, your Starbucks coffee mug that our city recycling or other recycling can’t do,” Roz Freeman with the Calgary Zoo said.

The zoo has been composting animal waste for decades, which helps grow their gardens.

As many as 15,000 visitors are expected at the zoo during the two-day Eggstravaganza event.
