WINNIPEG — Everyday activities can sometimes present the most unlikely challenges for families with children with disabilities. What most of us take for granted becomes even tougher for those that have to navigate through a world where even the simplest things are difficult.

Such is the case with the Lynxleg family. Micheala is a single mother with two sons, Keanu, 14, and Lukas, 10.

Since the day Lukas was born the family has had many obstacles to overcome.

“For somebody who has a child, they don’t expect their child to be born with a disability of any kind, they don’t expect that,” said Micheale Lynxleg.

Lukas uses a powered wheelchair to get around. He cannot walk and needs assistance with everyday activities. And it was by pure coincidence that they became involved with Variety, the Children’s Charity.

While at a movie with her two sons, Wayne Rogers, the former executive director of Variety took notice of the family and after the show approached Micheala with his card and told her to consider giving them a call.

The charity eventually installed a track system that is attached to a lift that assists Micheala in getting Lukas in and out of bed.

“Having a lift as a support system helps to kind of alleviate that pressure of having to carry this child on my own and having to bear the weight of my son,” said Micheala.

The daily routine now made much more manageable.
