Ability in Me opens new facility to support those with Down syndrome

SASKATOON – A Saskatoon charity celebrated World Down Syndrome Day with the grand opening of their new home. The charity Ability in Me officially opened its new facility in the city’s north-end on Monday.

The organization offers specialized therapy and language programs for children with Down syndrome.

Officials say the new space will allow the group to expand its operations.

Seventy-eight families currently use the service – which was first offered in January 2015.

The goal is to offer support for those with Down syndrome into their 20s.

“We’re here to support the children and the families for up to 22 years, so it’s that consistency and knowing that you have that expertise working with the children to reach their full potential,” said Tammy Ives, the executive director of Ability in Me.

World Down Syndrome Day has been observed by the United Nations since 2012.

An estimated four million people world-wide have the condition.
