Record number of candidates nominated in Sask. election

Saturday, March 19, at 2 p.m. CT was the deadline for candidates to file nomination papers. Despite some NDP and Sask Party scandals, a record number have been nominated for the general election.

A total of 268 candidates submitted their nomination papers. That’s 77 more than the 2011 election when 191 candidates ran.

2016 candidate breakdown:

  • 61 – Saskatchewan Party;
  • 61 – New Democratic Party;
  • 61 – Saskatchewan Liberal;
  • 58 – The Green Party;
  • 18 – Progressive Conservatives;
  • 4 – Western Independence Party of Saskatchewan;
  • 5 – Independent.

Fun fact: the previous highest record was in 1982, the 20th Saskatchewan election, when 250 candidates were officially nominated.
