Man in hospital after as many as 6 dogs attack him on northern Alberta reserve

ST. PAUL, Alta. – A man is in hospital with serious injuries to his face and arms after being attacked by as many as six dogs on a northern Alberta reserve.

St. Paul RCMP said the 21-year-old the man and two relatives were walking along a road on the Saddle Lake reserve, about 190 kilometres northeast of Edmonton, around midnight Thursday.

“As he was approaching a residence, there was a dog that they alleged was in the driveway that attacked him, basically launched at this face (and) bit him on the face,” Const. Sam Montasser said Friday.

“It’s unclear at this point exactly how many dogs joined in the attack, but we do believe it could be as many as six.”

Montasser said the first dog to attack was described as being a pitbull or a bulldog. The other dogs who joined the attack were mixed breeds, including one described as a German shepherd-type dog.

None of the dogs was leashed.

Police said the victim’s relatives tried to fight off the dogs, but the attack did not end until the homeowner pulled the animals away.

Montasser said officers expected to speak with the homeowner later Friday.

It’s not clear why the dogs attacked the man.

“There’s certainly nothing to suggest at this time that it was provoked or that they had done anything to tease the dogs.

“Of course, the matter is still under investigation and we are taking all possibilities into account, but we do have nothing to suggest at this point that it was provoked,” said the Mountie.
